I'm a makeup artist, and I've also had my makeup done on many occasions. For this reason, I understand the apprehension that some feel when makeup is being applied with products and tools that haven't been in my control, or with hands that I haven't seen washed. It can be worrying, and I've definitely seen makeup artists with some very unhygienic practices but there are things that you can look for and ask for to ensure that hygiene is being considered at all times. There are lots of great makeup artists who put hygiene as a priority. Here is my list of hygiene must haves so you know how to spot a true professional.

1. Your artist must have clean hands and nails. As good practice he/she should demonstrate cleaning or sanitizing hands in front of you.

2. Clean tools: brushes/sponges should have no residue and should have a clean scent. If you are a model in a show or you are a client getting made up after other clients, ensure clean brushes and sponges are being used on you. It is the artist’s responsibility to have disposables or have duplicate brushes to accommodate for back-to-back clients. The artist may opt to clean brushes in between clients but this can be time consuming if not factored into appointment time.

3. Clean products: products should look tidy and clean in the casing and the actual product should look and smell clean (no hair/dust/fuzz/cracked casing). Makeup antibacterial spray can be used to sanitize powder products.

4. Your artist should dispense: liquid/cream products with a spatula. Brushes should NEVER be dipped directly into cream or liquid. Lipsticks/chapsticks never directly applied (wiping it off or spraying with alcohol will not kill viruses) spatulas must be used. Foundations and concealers should be pumped out or dispensed with a spatula.

5. Disposable applicators: lip-glosses and mascaras should be applied with disposable applicators and never double dipped.

6. Your artist should sanitize tools: tweezers, razors, scissors, and brow trimmers should be sanitized in front of you with alcohol wipes before use.

7. Pencils should be sharpened to remove the top layer, which may have been in contact other mouths/eyes or may have just been exposed to the environment where dust and allergens can be on the surface.

8. Makeup should not be expired. Each product has a life span, some way shorter than others (ex. mascara). It would be hard for a client to determine whether the makeup is expired but you can look out for 'off' smells, unusual texture or discoloration, these are sure signs that it's time for those product to be thrown out.
